Reno Air Races one-hour special on NBC Sports March 27

The Biggest Little City is getting some airtime on national TV this Sunday.

NBC Sports will be airing a one-hour special about the Reno National Championship Air Races at at noon Pacific Time on March 27.

A promo for the show was released by the Reno Air Racing Association and JM Associates, which is producing the show for NBC Sports. The special will feature footage from last year’s air races, which attracted more than 150,000 spectators, according to RARA.

“We’ve been producing niche sports programs for over 40 years and when we were invited to see what the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nev., were all about, it took one quick look to know that this would be a hit with a national audience,” said Mike McKinnis, JM Associates vice president and executive producer. “Directing our cameras toward extremely compelling characters and fast, high-tech flying machines is a recipe for success.”

The one-hour special was described as an important vehicle for expanding awareness about the Reno event by organizers. RARA announced the TV show earlier this year as well as the addition of a large-scale drone demonstration to increase interest about the air races.

“(This show) is an incredible opportunity for the Air Races to be exposed to a national television audience,” said Mike Crowell, RARA chief executive officer. “It also provides positive, national exposure for Reno and the Northern Nevada community.”

In January, the organization also announced a $100,000 profit from the 2015 air races after initial projections of a $630,000 loss. The swing to profitability was made primarily through cost cutting.

This year’s 53rd Reno National Championship Air Races will be held from Sept. 14 to 18 and will feature a return of the Blue Angels for the first time in five years. Lucas Oil Aerobatics, the Smoke-n-Thunder Jet Show and Jim Pietz Aerosports also will be making appearances.

Organizers encouraged locals and air show fans to catch this Sunday’s NBC Sports special to help give the event a boost, as well as an opportunity to be featured on national TV once again. Last year’s air races generated an estimated $60 million in economic impact for the region, according to RARA.

“Now we need people to know about it so that the viewership will be such that NBC Sports wants to come back next year and do it again,” said spokeswoman Valerie Glenn.
