MAGNOLIA -- The Magnolia City Council voted unanimously Monday to rename Magnolia Municipal Airport the Ralph C. Weiser Field.
Saying that the airport has "in the last six years flown to heights I never imagined," Mayor Parnell Vann said the renaming of the airport was "special to all the commissioners."
The name change reflects the late Weiser's "legacy of service and dedication" and "serves as an enduring reminder of how [he] enriched the lives of others." Weiser formerly served on the airport commission.
The name change took effect Friday.
"We have already raised the private funds to erect a new sign," Vann said.
The airport, which is governed by a city commission, appointed three people to fill empty seats. Retired Southern Arkansas University President David Rankin, a pilot, will serve as the new chairman. He replaces Gene McPherson on the commission. Dan Hollsapple will replace James Stracker and Bob Thomason will replace Weiser.
